Oye! Group: The Mercedes Bushwick Healing Room

  • Medicine Walls 214 Starr Street Brooklyn, NY, 11237 United States (map)

The Mercedes Bushwick Healing Room is a multidisciplinary installation that includes a visual exhibit, a documentary, therapeutic art workshops, and a mural, inspired by Modesto 'Flako' Jimenez’s grandmother Mercedes, and the legacy of Latine individuals she helped migrate to the country. After immigrating to America as a kid, Flako was raised by his grandmother in Brooklyn. As an adult, he served as her main caregiver as she battled dementia.
The Mercedes Bushwick Healing Room was created to give our community of Bushwick a healing space to go for support, resources and tips.
Creating space to move from crisis to comfort when living the reality of a caregiver/someone living with dementia.

The Healing Room and Gallery is open for the public Monday, June 6th - Saturday, June 11th from 12PM - 5PM.
In this space guests will be able to experience the visual exhibit which includes a screening of the Mercedes documentary, share their stories through audio and writing prompts, and collect caregiving tips and resources collected by Karenly Vega for people living with Dementia/Alzheimer's and their caregivers/family members.

The Therapeutic Art Workshops are open to the public Tuesday, June 7th - Saturday, June 11th from 6PM - 8PM.
These therapeutic art workshops, led by art therapist Sarah Serrano-Esquilin and guest artists, are intended for caregivers and anyone connected to someone living with dementia. These workshops will provide an opportunity to engage in self-care, creative self-expression with no experience needed, and receive additional information regarding community resources.
All skill levels encouraged to participate.
